Book review: The Voice New Testament

How does one review a Bible? That was my first thought as I held this latest addition to my book collection. It should be more simple than a novel and narrative analysis, right? A synopsis would be unnecessary as would a review of the quality of writing. For some reason reviewing a translation of God's Word seemed more daunting by the moment.

Fortunately, that initial panic was soon to pass and I was able to enjoy the clear language used to convey the message of the Gospel and the Epistles. For a few Sundays I took The Voice along with my NASB (New American Standard Bible) translation for comparison. Here are a couple of comparisons:
"For I am not the least bit embarrassed about the gospel. I won't shy away from it because it is God's power to save every person who believes: first the Jew, and then the non-Jew." Romans 1:16, The Voice

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Romans 1:16, NASB

And

"Messenger: Don't be afraid! Listen! I bring good news, news of great joy, news that will affect all people everywhere. Today, in the city of David, a Liberator has been born for you! He is the promised Anointed One, the Supreme Authority!" Luke 2:10-11, The Voice
"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news the will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." Luke 2:10-11, NIV
The Voice New Testament also gives some good background to preface each book as well as some helpful notations throughout bordering on Study Bible material. Each change in speaker (whether it is Christ or another person) is clearly labeled to avoid confusion as seen above in the Gospel of Luke. A nice feature is also the plan to read through the entire New Testament set up in a series of 24 weeks or a 40-day plan to serve your personal preference.
