5 Things: DV Awareness Edition

Happy Friday! Hope you all had a great week and were not in a week-long chocolate bunny coma.

This week I'm trying something a little different. Two pretty incredible podcasts came out (fairly) recently to highlight a real problem in our society today: Domestic Violence. Although it's not October (Domestic Violence Awareness Month), it's never a bad time to talk about this and to help people in these relationships. Even if you haven't been in an abusive relationship, I'll guarantee you know someone who has.

Whether physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, etc. there are just people out there who like to control, isolate, and intimidate others. Sometimes to some very dire consequences for the victim. So, please take a look at the resources below. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, please, please, please get help. You can leave and you will be more than okay.

1) The National Domestic Violence Hotline  (US) is 1-800-799-7233. There's even a chat function on the website if you don't think that you can talk on the phone. There are more resources than you know to get you out safely. They can even help you find the means to heal and to thrive afterward. You are not alone and, yes, leaving is absolutely worth it!

2) Cold is a newish podcast that delves behind the scenes of the Susan Powell case. You may recall how her disappearance and then the murder of her two young sons played out in the national media. Surprisingly, there's even more that was not widely published. Even the well-documented fact that Susan feared for her life but never had the courage to leave. Listener discretion strongly advised here.

3) The podcast titled Something Was Wrong really hit a nerve with me. How many times have you seen a sister, a cousin, or a friend with a guy like this? I am so proud of this girl for getting out and I hope her story will encourage others to do the same before they get down the aisle.

4) WebMd.com has a valuable resource on how to recognize domestic violence. The page outlines how to identify signs in your own relationship or that of others. There's also a good list of suggestions when you know someone who needs help.

5) For those of you who just want to help, there is the Domestic Violence Awareness Project. Let's stand together to keep this issue in the national spotlight and to make sure that people who are victims know that they can get out!

Okay, that's all for now. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
